Mindfulness and Self-Compassion
If a good friend told you that they got passed over for a promotion, would you say, “Well, you’re the worst performer and you don’t even know how to suck up to your boss”? Probably not. But strangely, these are things we say to ourselves in such situations.
Self-compassion involves treating yourself the way you would treat a friend who is having a hard time, turning that kindness and understanding inward rather than being harshly self-critical. Self-compassion is one of the most powerful sources of coping and resilience we have available to us, radically improving our mental and physical wellbeing. When you are mindful of your struggles and respond to yourself with compassion, you can learn to embrace yourself despite the imperfections, and receive the strength needed to thrive.
